1716 ਈ: 'ਚ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਉਪਰੰਤ ਮੁਗ਼ਲਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਅੱਤਿਆਚਾਰ ਕਰਨੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਕਿ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਲ ਪੈਣੇ ਵੀ ਆਰੰਭ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਦੇ ਗਵਰਨਰ ਜ਼ਕਰੀਆ ਖਾਨ ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਦੀ ਹੱਦ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ। ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਨੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਨਾ ਠੀਕ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਜ਼ੁਲਮੀ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦਾ ਟਾਕਰਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ। ਅਜਿਹੇ ਹਾਲਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਲੰਗਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰੀ
ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਮੁਖਬਰੀ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੀਆ ਰੰਧਾਵਾਨੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਿਭਗਤ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੀਆ ਰੰਧਾਵਾ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਰੇ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਰਾ ਵੀ ਦੇਰ ਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤੇ ਗਵਰਨਰ ਜ਼ਕਰੀਆ ਖਾਨ ਦੇ ਕੰਨ ਭਰਨੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਜ਼ਕਰੀਆ ਖਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਬਰਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਹੀ ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਦੀ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਤਸੀਹੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ। ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਜੁਰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਅੱਤਿਆਚਾਰ ਸਹਿਣ ਕਰਨੇ ਪਏ ਪਰ ਉਹ ਜ਼ਰਾ ਵੀ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਸਿਦਕ ਤੋਂ ਨਾ ਡੋਲੇ।
ਖੋਪਰੀ ਉਤਾਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ
ਜ਼ਕਰੀਆ ਖਾਨ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਧਰਮ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਬਣਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ ਤੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਨਾ ਮੰਨਣ 'ਤੇ ਕੇਸ ਕਤਲ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਪਰ ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਨਾ ਬਣਨ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਕੇਸ ਕਤਲ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਮੰਨੀ ਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਸਿਰ ਕਟਵਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਦਾਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਸਕਦਾ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਜ਼ਕਰੀਆ ਖਾਨ ਨੇ ਜੱਲਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਖੋਪਰੀ ਉਤਾਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਜਿਸ 'ਤੇ ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਰਾ ਵੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੇਸਾਂ-ਸੁਆਸਾਂ[2] ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭਾਅ ਕੇ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਕਾਇਮ ਕੀਤੀ। ਜਲਾਦ ਰੰਬੀ ਨਾਲ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਖੋਪਰੀ ਉਤਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਰਹੇ। ਪੰਥ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਦਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਲਿਖਦਾ ਹੈ:
- ਜਿਮ ਜਿਮ ਸਿੰਘਨ ਤੁਰਕ ਸਤਾਵੈ।
- ਤਿਮ ਤਿਮ ਮੁਖ ਸਿੰਘ ਲਾਲੀ ਆਵੈ।
ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ
ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਖੋਪਰੀ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਆਪ 22 ਦਿਨ ਤੱਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਰਹੇ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪ ਨੇ 1745 ਈ: ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਭਾਈ ਤਾਰੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਅਦੁੱਤੀ ਸ਼ਹਾਦਤ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ। ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਹਾਦਤ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੰਚਮ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਦਾ ਆਗਾਜ਼ ਆਪ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਧਰਮ, ਕੌਮ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਦੇ ਭਲੇ ਹਿੱਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਹ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਮਰ ਮਿੱਟਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
