ਖ਼ੁਸਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ (2 ਫ਼ਰਵਰੀ 1915 - 20 ਮਾਰਚ 2014) ਇੱਕ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਨਾਵਲਕਾਰ, ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰ ਸਨ।[1] ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਫ਼ਤਾਵਾਰੀ ਕਾਲਮ, ਵਿਦ ਮੈਲਿਸ ਟੁਵਾਰਡਜ਼ ਵੱਨ ਐਂਡ ਆਲ, ਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲ਼ਾ ਕਾਲਮ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਕਈ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਛਪਦਾ ਸੀ; ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ''ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਟਾਈਮਜ਼'', ਦ ਟੈਲੀਗ੍ਰਾਫ਼ ਅਤੇ ਦ ਪਾਇਨੀਅਰ ਆਦਿ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ। 70 ਅਤੇ 80ਵਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਕਈ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਰਸਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਪਾਦਕ ਵੀ ਰਹੇ। ਉਹ ਪਦਮ ਭੂਸ਼ਣ (1974) ਅਤੇ ਪਦਮ ਵਿਭੂਸ਼ਣ (2007) ਖ਼ਿਤਾਬ ਵੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੁੱਢਲਾ ਜੀਵਨ
ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 2 ਫ਼ਰਵਰੀ 1915 ਨੂੰ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਡਾਲੀ (ਹੁਣ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਬ ਜ਼ਿਲਾ, ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ) ਵਿਖੇ ਇੱਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਸ. ਸੋਭਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਇਮਾਰਤੀ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਚਾ ਉੱਜਲ ਸਿੰਘ (1895–1985) ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਮਿਲ ਨਾਡੂ ਦੇ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਗਵਰਨਰ ਸਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਤੱਕ ਦੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਗਵਰਨਮੈਂਟ ਕਾਲਜ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਬਰਤਾਨੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਂਬਰਿਜ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਨਰ ਟੇਂਪਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਆ ਕੇ ਵਕਾਲਤ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਫਿਰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਖ਼ਾਨਦਾਨ ਸਮੇਤ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਆ ਵਸੇ। ਉਹ ਕੁ ਅਰਸਾ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਮਾਮਲਿਆਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਮਹਿਕਮੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਫ਼ਾਰਤੀ ਅਹੁਦਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਵੀ ਤਾਇਨਾਤ ਰਹੇ ਪਰ ਛੇਤੀ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ1951 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਲ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਰੇਡੀਉ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਜਿੱਥੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਬਰਦਸਤ ਕੈਰੀਅਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਹੋਈ। ਉਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਰਸਾਲੇ ‘ਇਲਸਟ੍ਰੇਟਿਡ ਵੀਕਲੀ’ ਦੇ ਐਡੀਟਰ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਰਸਾਲਾ ਸ਼ੋਹਰਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੁਲੰਦੀਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਿਆ। ਸਿੰਘ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਟਾਈਮਜ਼ ਦੇ ਐਡੀਟਰ ਵੀ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਹਰ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਮੁਲਕੀ ਅਤੇ ਗ਼ੈਰ-ਮੁਲਕੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਕਾਲਮ ਲਿਖੇ।
