ਖੇਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਗਿੱਲ (1 ਸਤੰਬਰ 1930 - 17 ਸਤੰਬਰ 2019) ਇਕ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਜਨੈਟਿਕਸਿਸਟ, ਪਲਾਂਟ ਬ੍ਰੀਡਰ, ਜੈਵ-ਵਿਗਿਆਨਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਇਸ ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਵੀ ਸਨ।[1] ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਾਂਤੀ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਣਕ, ਅਲਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਤਿਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਧੀਆਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ "ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਣਕ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਈਬ੍ਰੀਡ ਕਣਕ ਉਪਰ ਖੋਜ" (Research on wheat and triticale in the Punjab) ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਵੀ ਲਿਖੀ।[2]  ਉਹ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਟਰੱਸਟ ਅਤੇ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਸੁਸਾਇਟੀ, ਬੜੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ  ਦੇ ਵਾਈਸ ਪ੍ਰੈਜ਼ੀਡੈਂਟ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਚੈਰੀਟੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ।[3]  ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ 'ਰਫ਼ੀ ਅਹਮਦ ਕਿਦਵਾਈ ਅਵਾਰਡ',  'ਆਈ.ਸੀ.ਏ.ਆਰ. ਟੀਮ ਰਿਸਰਚ ਅਵਾਰਡ FICCI ਅਵਾਰਡ', 'ICAR ਗੋਲਡਨ ਜੁਬਲੀ ਅਵਾਰਡ', 'ISOR ਸਿਲਵਰ ਜੁਬਲੀ ਅਵਾਰਡ' ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਲਈ 'ਪਦਮ ਭੂਸ਼ਣ' ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਨਵਾਜਿਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਜੀਵਨ

ਖੇਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਗਿੱਲ ਨੇ 1 ਸਿਤੰਬਰ, 1930 ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਛੋਟੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਕਾਲੇਕੇ, ਜਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਮੋਗਾ, ਪੰਜਾਬ  ਵਿਚ ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ 1949 ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਕਾਲਜ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਐਗਰੀਕਲਚਰਲ ਸਾਇੰਸ (ਬੀ.ਐਸ.ਸੀ.) ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰੈਜੂਏਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਸਟਰ ਦੀ ਡਿਗਰੀ (ਐਮਐਸਸੀ) 1951 ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਸ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੈਰੀਅਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਅਾਤ ਇਕ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਰਿਸਰਚ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇਪੰਜਾਬ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਫੇਰ 1963 ਵਿਚ ਕੈਲੀਫ਼ੋਰਨੀਆ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੀਐਚ.ਡੀ ਡਿਗਰੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਭਾਰਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋਫ਼ੈਸਰ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਡਿਪਰਟਮੈਂਟ ਆਫ਼ ਜੈਨਿਟਿਕ (1966-68) ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਹੋਏ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪਲਾਂਟ ਬ੍ਰੀਡਿੰਗ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖੀ (1968-79) ਵੀ ਰਹੇ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਕਾਲਜ ਦੇ ਡੀਨ(1979-83), ਡਿਰੈਕਟਰ ਆਫ ਰਿਸਰਚ (1983-87), ਡਿਰੈਕਟਰ ਆਫ ਐਕਸਟੈਨਸ਼ਨ ਐਜੂਕੇਸ਼ਨ (1987-89) ਵੀ ਰਹੇ। 1990 ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਇਸ-ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਵੀ ਬਣੇ।
